Congenital Heart Defects: what are they?

It is reasonable to assume that the majority of Heart to Heart Shanghai Volunteers would have little prior knowledge of the various defects, disorders, syndromes and their related surgical procedures that are associated with congenital heart patients.

Abbreviations such as "TOF" (Tetralogy of Fallot), "VSD" (Ventricular Septal Defects) and "ASD" (Atrial Septal Defects) are often noted on the clinical records of the children we befriend at the hospital.

With the help of volunteers who have a career in paediatric cardiovascular nursing and through reference to various medical websites, Heart to Heart Shanghai will write regular articles which will explain these and other related topics.

Hopefully these articles will give Heart to Heart Shanghai Volunteers and other visitors to our Heart to Heart Shanghai website a better understanding of the problems the children in the children's ward have encountered and the lifesaving procedures that are performed on them by the dedicated surgeons at the various hospitals we work with.
